Kaari - Smoke Fired Vase

Kaari (कारी), Hindi for the maker. A wheel thrown ceramic vase from Pondicherry, finished using one of the oldest firing techniques in ceramics. The clay fires directly among wood and leaves, and the charcoal gradients across the surface are the ash they leave behind. No two carry the same marks.

The making

Rajan throws the body wide through the middle and narrows it at the neck, all in one pull on the wheel. The clay fires twice. Once to harden. Then into the open brick kiln, among burning wood and dried leaves. The ash lands wherever the heat carries it. Darker where the fire lingered. Lighter where it passed.

What does it feel like to hold?

Smooth when you hold it. You can feel the faint lines from the wheel under your fingers. Turn it and it’s a different vase every time. The ash marks wrap around the body like smoke that never settled the same way twice.
