Samudr - Amphora Vase

Samudr (समुद्र), Sanskrit for ocean, is a wheel thrown amphora vase from Pondicherry, fired at 1160°C. The blue glaze is shifted by the kiln between ocean, sand, and sediment.

The making

The glaze goes on as a single blue. Inside the kiln it turns liquid. Where it gathers, you get deep ocean. Where it thins, the clay shows through as sand. The throw is Kavitha's. The colour is the kiln's.

What does it feel like to hold?

Heavy. About 2.2 kg. The surface is smooth and cool all over, the glaze glossy across the body and handles both. Turn it and the blue looks different depending on the light. It's the kind of piece you pick up more often than you need to.
