Taraash - Asymmetrical Decor Bowl

Taraash (तराश्न), Sanskrit for to chisel, to refine. True to the name. A ceramic bowl from Pondicherry, wheel thrown and then shaped at the edges by hand into soft asymmetry. Gas-fired twice at 1160°C. The muted mauve-pink surface carries a matte glaze with speckled texture inside.

The making

Every bowl comes off the wheel round and even. Rajan shapes the edges after, pushing and pulling sections of the rim until it undulates. There's no template. He stops when the edge looks right to him. It fires twice at 1160°C. The matte glaze and the speckled interior develop across both rounds. The speckle pattern is different in every bowl.

What does it feel like to hold?

Run your fingers along the rim and no two sections feel the same. The matte exterior is smooth under your palm. The inside is different. Speckled from the glaze, with a texture you notice when you reach in. It feels like a piece that was finished, then deliberately unfinished at the edges.
